1770 Diving

The town of 1770 now occupies the place where Captain James Cook first landed in Queensland and the year this happened is reflected in the name of the town. 1770 lies on a tidal estuary protected from the prevailing south easterly winds by Round Hill Head. Today it is an important tourist town and a common stop over point for yachts and cruisers moving up and down the Queensland coastline. The nearest cities are Bundaberg which is a bit over an hours drive to the south and Gladstone which is a bit over an hours drive to the north.

towns of 1770 and its sister town of Agnes Water have both ocean surfing beaches and calm estuary waters. It is a sportsman’s paradise with surfing, fishing and golf at the beautiful little nine hole course. Fishing here is prolific with both deep water reef fishing available on the open ocean and calm water estuary fishing on the river. To the north of the town is the Eurimbula National Park which is absolutely superb and a great place to go camping or for a picnic, and to its north and clearly visible from 1770, is Bustard Head and the Bustard Head lighthouse. There is a day tour from 1770 that is unique. It uses amphibious LARC vehicles to take patrons to both the National Park and the lighthouse. It departs from the 1770 marina and runs daily. Also running daily from the marina is a day tour to Lady Musgrave Island which is a coral cay and large coral lagoon right on the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of the reefs most beautiful places and should not be missed while you are in the area. The operators of this tour maintain a permanent viewing platform, anchored inside the lagoon itself.
