Heron Island lies off the Queensland coast near the city of Gladstone and it is from here that the island can be accessed. The Island is one of the few true coral cays on the Great Barrier Reef and these types of island are the very best if you are looking for a diving holiday. Heron Island is also the location for the Great Barrier Reefs research station and this is because the waters here are clean and some of the best corals on the reef are on display here. The island is also an important place for migratory seabirds to breed and many turtles also breed in the soft coral sands here.

The waters surrounding the island are full of coral reefs which all form part of the chain. There are many wonderful dive sites around the island however, being a coral cay, it is actually sitting on top of the reef and you can snorkel off the beach among some of the most beautiful coral in the world. The island can be accessed from Gladstone either by fast catamaran which runs daily or by helicopter, which runs on demand. There are no day tourists that come to Heron Island so you will only be sharing it with the staff and other guests. Among the staff are fully trained diving professionals so you can come here and learn to dive or if you are experienced, you can join one of the dive masters on an advanced dive.

The resort at Heron Island is of international standard. It has comfortable accommodation in three different standards as well as a great restaurant and bar. The resort is rated at four stars. Most accommodation is in separate cabins and is right on the beachfront. This is possibly the most relaxing place to come for a tropical holiday, anywhere in Queensland and Heron Island certainly will live up to its fantastic reputation.
