The Keppel Islands lie of Queensland’s Capricorn Coast and Great Keppel Island is the largest in the group. For many years the resort on Great Keppel Island was a popular holiday destination as the island enjoys a fantastic climate and has many beautiful bays and beaches where the swimming and snorkeling is fantastic. The beaches are composed of beautiful white sand and you can always find one that is protected from the wind. For many years, Great Keppel Island was one of the most popular backpacker destinations in Queensland and the resort had a reputation for being party central. There are two properties on the island that still supply budget accommodation.

The main resort on Great Keppel Island has now been demolished to make way for a brand new resort. As of mid 2010 the local council and state government are still considering the redevelopment plan for the island which includes a boat harbour, marina and golf course as well as a large new accommodation development that will operate as the new resort. Great Keppel Island has an airstrip which allows light aircraft to land on the island and it also has regular ferry services that operate every day from Keppel Bay Marina at Rosslyn Bay which is just south of Yeppoon. If the new resort is given approval and is constructed, it will offer a fantastic new holiday destination in one of Queensland’s most beautiful island groups.
