The city of Bundaberg is well known throughout Australia. The wall to wall advertising campaign for its iconic rum is a household word in Australia, and even though most Australian have never been there, they identify with the city because most Australian who are over 18 have sampled its produce. Bundaberg is a city whose economy is based on sugar, its production, its processing and its derivatives. It is also a coastal port city and a major regional service provider. The city lies on the shores of the Burnett River which also provides a port that is growing in importance in the region. It is a tropical city and its climate must be overwhelming for the giant polar bear that is the rum advertisement’s major character.
Many people stop over in Bundaberg for a night or two when driving along the Queensland coast. it is about four hours drive north from Brisbane and it also has a regional airport. In the city center are many hotels and motels that provide accommodation for tourists and commercial travelers. There is a busy CBD as well as a huge plaza style shopping center known as Sugarland Plaza. The city is one of the largest in the upper Burnett region and has a population of approximately 80000 in the greater Bundaberg region. Along the coastline from Bundaberg are a number of holiday villages. These include, Elliot Heads, Bargara and Burnett heads. Large marinas are found in Burnett Heads and in the Burnett River in the city center. Many cruising yachts call into Bundaberg while travelling along the coast and international yachts often make Bundaberg their first port of entry. Wildlife lovers will love to visit the turtle hatchery at Mon repos which is close to Bundaberg itself. Bundaberg has lots of great places to stay and is a fantastic place to spend a couple of days on your way north or south along the coast. |
