Just to the east of Bundaberg and situated on the oceanfront is the holiday town of Bargara. For many years it was regarded as just the seaside suburb of Bundaberg, but today, the construction of many new apartment style resorts along the beach and rocky headlands has created a resort town with lots of holiday appeal. This region has also attracted lots of permanent residents to the area and with that has come excellent shopping facilities, schools and permanent sporting facilities. For the holidaymaker, the two golf courses in the area are the main attraction. The Bargara Golf course always welcomes visitors and is an excellent beachside layout. The annual veterans competition always attracts a full field from surrounding regions and people on holidays in Bargara tend to come to play golf during the day and come again for dinner and entertainment at night. Coral Cove lies just to the south of Bargara and the Coral Cove resort, which is located on the beachfront, also has a great golf course. Coral Cove has the only par six in Australia and also has some spectacular holes that require the tee shot to cross a section of the ocean and foreshore on its way to the green. It is quite spectacular in this regard. So as you can see, any golfers coming for a holiday to Bargara, will be well catered for.
The Mon Repos turtle rookery is closer to Bargara than any other town. It is located about ten minutes drive to the north and is Queensland’s most important mainland turtle rookery. Several species including Green Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles, Leatherback Turtles and Loggerhead turtles all come here to breed. The female turtles lay their eggs high on the beach at night and there is an interpretative center at Mon Repos with National Park rangers in attendance who escort visitors on night time visits to the rookery to see the turtles. When the babies hatch out, you can watch them flapping their way across the beach to the ocean. Bargara has plenty of great holiday accommodation and is also a popular place for a family holiday. |
